ABOUT

Bio

Shoshanna Rockman began to write (compulsively) just two years ago — an exponential leap into work that is edgy, raw and humourful. A feminist humanist slant. A scientific twist. A steely desire. To bridge gulfs. Brave wolves and ride dragons bareback. National and international awards trail. In the wake. Of her words — both written and performed. Her quest is to glamorise, accessorise (make accessible) and contemporise this ancient art.

She is the proud mother of five children (whom she feeds a strict diet of letters) and benefactress to a(n orange) rescue dingo-dog. Other traits/roles include editor, copywriter, English tutor, jazz fan, fashionista (of sorts), performance poetry curator, beach comber—and vivid dreamer.

In 2021, she was shortlisted for ACU (two poems), Ros Spencer, Robyn Mathison Poetry,  and the SSWW. In the same year she was published in Makarelle, Slush Love and Palette.

Then in 2022, Shoshanna Rockman was awarded first place for Batimore Science Fiction Society Prize, second place for Melbourne Poets Union 2022, 2 nd place for Oprelle Coming Home Prize 2022 and third place for My Brother Jack 2021. She was shortlisted for the Minds Shine Bright 2022, had two poems shortlisted for the WA Writers Poetry d’Amour Prize, five poems shortlisted for the 2022 Australian Catholic University Prize and three shortlisted for the Ros Spencer Poetry Contest. She had two poems highly commended for the Woorilla Prize.

This year her awards/publications include: The Victorian Writer, a Wheeler’s Centre Hot Desk Fellowship, committee membership for Melbourne Jewish Book Week (programming), a high commendation for the Ada Cambridge Poetry Prize, a shortlist and a high commendation for the Australian Catholic University Prize, longlisted for the Aurora Poetry Prize, shortlisted for the Fish Anthology Prize, the Kathryn Purnell Poetry Prize ( 2 poems), the Arts University Bournemouth Poetry Prize (2 poems, awaiting judges’ final decision), the Mudfish Poetry Prize, inclusion in Melbourne Poets Union Anthology 2023, The Liquid Amber Press ‘Home’ Anthology 2023, Poetry d'Amour Anthology 2023 and first place for both the Calanthe Poetry Prize, the Poetica Christie Press Prize, the Port Writers’ Prize and the Sutherland Shire Literary Prize.

She was February poet of the month at the Cherry Tree Hotel and performed at the Wheeler Centre in July.

Her debut poetry collection, take me for tame, (published with Ginniderra) will appear in September.
